1. Determine Qualification You Are Seeking
Choose the thickness (Limited 3/8" or Unlimited 1"), the welding process (e.g., SMAW, FCAW, FCAW-G), and the applicable position(s) (e.g. 1G, 2G, 3G, 4G).
2. Order and Receive Your Test Kit
We supply the AWS D1.1 code-compliant coupons, backing strips, specific PQR/WPS, and the return testing instructions and authorization. We will even do the fit-up and assembly of the test.
3. Perform The Welding Test
Weld the coupon by following the provided Welding Procedure Specification (WPS).
4. Return for Lab Test
Return your completed welded test specimen to us with our "AUTHORIZATION TO TEST" hologram sticker attached. Our CWI then performs the destructive bend testing per AWS code.
5. Get Qualified & Receive Your WQR
Once you successfully pass, you will receive your official Welder Qualification Record (WQR) signed by our Certified Welding Inspector(s). You can then take this to your school or employer for final acceptance and welder "certification". This is the exact same process as a trade school, workplace, or training facility - without the hassle.
AWS D1.1 Welder Qualification & Testing Notice
Under AWS D1.1, welders are qualified, not certified. Qualification is achieved by successfully completing a prescribed weld test and having the results evaluated and documented in accordance with the AWS code.
PennWelding™ Corporation provides formal weld test evaluation and documentation for AWS D1.1 welder performance qualification. When a submitted test coupon meets all acceptance criteria, we issue a Welder Performance Qualification Record (WPQR) documenting the welding process, position, material thickness, and test results.
Per AWS D1.1, the welder's employer is ultimately responsible for verifying the identity of the individual who performed the test weld and for accepting the qualification for official use. This is the industry-standard process followed by all AWS-compliant testing facilities and Certified Welding Inspectors.
In practical terms, successful completion of testing through PennWelding™ provides the welder with the official qualification documentation required by employers, inspectors, and project owners to demonstrate compliance with AWS D1.1.
